Top Ten Tuesday: Meet Cute Book Edition

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt is: Books You’d Mash Together (pick two books you think would make an epic story if combined). When I first read this prompt, my mind was filled with so many ideas that I couldn’t write them all down. But I managed to compile a list of what I hope are some interesting “meet cutes” for books. What would happen if this book met that book? Probably shenanigans, but here’s what I came up with.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo and The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch: Both of these books are high fantasy that feature a ragtag group of thieves in a populated city pulling off ridiculous heists. It’s a no-brainer how amazing (and deadly and bloody and sassy) it would be for the Gentlemen Bastards to meet the Dregs crew. I mean… just imagine all the stabbing, pickpocketing, and waffle eating that would commence!

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell: Really, I want these two books to combine because I want to see Smaug come face to face with the likes of Toothless. Small, sassy lil Toothless. I’m not sure Smaug would know what to do with him, and I don’t know what Bilbo and Hiccup would do with either of them. It would be highly entertaining.

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling: I haven’t read Jurassic Park yet but if it’s even an inkling like the movie, I think this mash up would be both exciting and terrifying. Newt Scamander teaming up with Ian Malcolm to find all the fantastic dinosaurs who have been set loose in New York? Sign me up.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis: This one took me a moment to figure out, but Alice falling down the rabbit hole is similar to the Pevensies going through the wardrobe. Both end up in new worlds full of strange creatures and lots of magic. I can imagine Alice and Lucy becoming fast friends as they navigate the bizarre WonderNarnia and try to defeat the White Witch of Hearts. Plus, both of the authors have Lewis in their name. It’s meant to be.

Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery: Both Laura and Anne helped shape my love for books as a child, and I can just imagine their fiery spirits colliding in a fantastic way. Anne would be all over learning to ride a horse bareback and I think Laura would fall in love with Green Gables like she fell in love with all of the places her family lived over the years.

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young and Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo: Both of these books feature strong, kickass ladies that are up against some pretty high odds. But both save the day and survive to save the next day. I think Eelyn and Diana would find similarities not only in their stories but in their strengths and their minds. They would make an awesome team-up, whether they’re fighting vikings or super villains.

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling and Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan: The main reason I paired these two is because they were the most popular book series during the 2000s and I think it’d be interesting to see how the Boy Who Lived and the Son of Poseidon would interact with one another. They both fight monsters, have magic abilities, and are legends among their kind (wizards and demigos, respectively). I think they could each other a lesson or two and also just find a shared kinship in one another.

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne: Okay, but just imagine Winnie-the-Pooh visiting the hobbits in the Shire. He would get along with them so well. He already basically lives in a hobbit hole, he thinks only of honey in the way a hobbit thinks only of food, and he likes to spend the day sitting around and thinking. Also, just imagine if the Hundred Acre Woods was Mirkwood (or maybe when it was still considered Greenwood). I can just imagine Rabbit (and all of his Friends-and-Relations) and Radagast getting along really well.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Warcross by Marie Lu: Warcross already is basically a virtual Hunger Games but with less death and dying and more video gaming. So I can imagine how the Game Makers would have a field day with the Warcross technology, and I think the tributes would appreciate a game where they didn’t actually die. Maybe the arenas would be less tech-based and futuristic with Hunger Games thrown into the mix, but I think it could make for an interesting story.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber and The Night Circus by Erin Morganstern: Of course, these two stories go together like two peas in a pod. I can just imagine Marco and Celia trying to navigate Legendary’s carnival while Scarlett and Tella have a chance to spend a night at The Night Circus, no tricks or games involved, just an evening together having fun. Plus, this book would be absolutely beautiful to read.
