Book Review: Adventures with Waffles by Maria Parr

It’s obvious why I had to read this book. Adventures with Waffles sounds like the perfect book for a blog about waffles, and it was tons of fun!

Adventures with Waffles

Trille and his best friend, Lena, are always getting themselves into trouble with their crazy adventures. But Trille doesn’t mind the trouble because he loves sharing everything with his best friend. But when Lena keeps a secret from him and other aspects of his life seem to go sideways, Trille wonders if anything will be right again.

Adventures with Waffles is set up with episodic chapters instead of a single, over-arching plot. There is conflict that does come into play near the end of the book, but overall, the book relays various “adventures” the main character, Trille, and his best friend, Lena, have over the course of a year.

While at times the book is loads of fun with a lot of craziness that reminds me of a lot of books I read as child (like Ramona Quimby or Harris and Me), at times I felt there was more to be desired. Of course, I am not the intended audience for such a book, so that may have been why I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I had hoped to.

In addition, the book title suggests the characters had “adventures with waffles” but they only have waffles once or twice in the story. For such a hefty title, I expected more waffles. But again, that just might be me and my love for waffles judging the book. The waffle aspects that do come into play are fun and I like how it ties together in the end.

Overall, Adventures with Waffles is a fun story for adventure-seeking youngsters. It takes place in Norway so the it was cool to read details about their homes and way of life that differ from my own. I also admire how the beginning and ending come full circle. If you like waffles and adventures, give this book a try.

~I checked out a copy of Adventures with Waffles by Maria Parr from my local library and chose to write this review of my own free will. All opinions are my own.~
