A while ago, I saw Nicole from Book-Wyrm-Knits do a post to help “declutter” her Goodreads TBR. I have a lot of books on Goodreads TBR (many of them being comic books) and I do periodically go through and remove ones I don’t care for, but I like the idea of starting from the beginning and working forward.
Guidelines:
- Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
- Order by ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
C.S. Lewis books: The first nine books on my Goodreads TBR are all by C.S. Lewis. 2011 Jaime decided to just mark every C.S. Lewis book as “want to read,” and 2019 Jaime still has every intention to read them all. We’ll see. Verdict: KEEP
Superman: Red Son / Superman: Secret Identity / Superman: Peace on Earth: The next few on my list are Superman comics. Again, 2011 Jaime had high ambitions to read every comic book I came across. For now, I’ll keep them on my list, but they aren’t a priority right now. Verdict: KEEP
Jurassic Park: I bought the Barnes and Noble leather bound edition and it’s absolutely gorgeous. I’ve wanted to read this for years, but I haven’t gotten to it yet. I hope to read it this fall. Verdict: KEEP
Speaker for the Dead: Ender’s Game is one of my favorite science-fiction books, but I never read the rest of the series. I can’t decide if it’s worth pursuing or if I should just enjoy Ender’s Game. For now, I think I’ll keep it just in case I decide to give it a try. Verdict: KEEP
Ender’s Shadow: Again, like Speaker for the Dead, I have intention to read the sequel series to Ender’s Game, but I’m not sure when. Verdict: KEEP
In the Hall of the Dragon King: I own a copy of this book and the rest of the trilogy, so it’s definitely staying on my list. I just need to make myself actually read the books I own… Verdict: KEEP
The Avengers, Vol. 1 (2010): There are so many Avengers comics and it’s hard to keep track of what begins where. After doing some research, this isn’t the beginning of the New Avengers comic line, so I think I’m going to switch this one out for the one that begins from 2005. VERDICT: REMOVE
The Girl of Fire and Thorns: I’ve thought about reading this for a long time, and part of it’s because Rae Carson is an Ohio author, but I’m not sure I care enough about this book to actually read it. Verdict: REMOVE
His Majesty’s Dragon: A friend recommended this to me a long time ago, but I never got around to reading it. It’s historical fiction with dragons and honestly that sounds amazing. Verdict: KEEP
Inkheart: A long time ago, I tried to read this book and gave it up. I acquired copies of it and the second book in the series but still haven’t read it. I’m not sure I will. Verdict: REMOVE
What books on your TBR list no longer interest you?
Ooh, fun! I know what you mean about keeping sequels on the TBR for the sake of loving the first book. It can be hard to make that decision sometimes. Have fun decluttering your TBR!

Thank you! 🙂
I just never know if some books will have good sequels or not.

It’s true! And sometimes I’ll end up adding the whole series because I loved the first book. I’m not willing to remove them from the TBR until I hit a book in the series that I don’t like.

When I first read it, it was a long time ago too and I remember I didn’t get far into it. (But that was also when I rarely gave up reading a book.) Maybe someday I’ll try it again, but I need more shelf space and something has to go.
