Writing Update + April Camp NaNoWriMo 2020

It’s been a while since I talked about my writing here. I intended to share more snippets of writing from the Teen Writing Club prompts, but the last time we met the exercise wasn’t conducive for sharing and then all the other meetings have been cancelled so far since my library closed. *shrugs*

Anyways, I’ve been toying with an idea I started for NaNoWriMo 2018, but I never quite finished because I realized the world and characters and magic were much bigger than a single 50K was going to cover. I was also distracted by all the back stories that I probably don’t even need to include but wrote anyways.

I don’t usually outline with first drafts, but I started a rough one for this story to get myself on track. Mapping it out actually gave me more inspiration so for the past few weeks, I’ve been rewriting the beginning chapters again to set myself straight and change details to fit with my new ideas. It’s been going a lot better than I expected.

My plan is to continue writing this in April for Camp NaNoWriMo and then keep going in May until it’s finished. I’ve split the story into three parts, so my goal is write one part each month. We’ll see how that goes.

But what is the story, you might ask? That’s a good question. It’s complicated. I don’t have a synopsis, but it includes magic and pirates and kick-butt adventure. There’s a boy who is dying from his magic, a pirate captain running from her past, and a girl who can sing things into existence. When the girl gets kidnapped by Evil Bad Guys, the boy sets out to find her and meets the pirate captain, who agrees to help him.

I’m excited to write about these characters again and also see where the story goes. There’s a lot to uncover, so I feel kind of like a pirate captain myself searching for treasure. (I’m honestly going to blame Kingdom Hearts III right now for making me so inspired by pirates because the Caribbean level is awful to navigate but so aesthetically pleasing.)

What have you been writing? Who else is joining April’s Camp NaNoWriMo?

  1. Oh, that sounds like a fun story! I’m not planning on doing Camp NaNo this April (I’m not planning on doing any NaNo events until I can turn my writing into a sustainable habit) but best of luck to you! Camp NaNo has sometimes been more beneficial to me than NaNoWriMo itself.
