Book Spotlight: Among the Beasts and Briars by Ashley Poston

Welcome to book spotlight where instead of giving you another book review, I’m just going to talk about books I’ve read recently that I enjoyed.

If you’ve been around on my blog, you know how much I enjoy Ashley Poston‘s books. From contemporary fairy tale retellings to sci-fi adventures, she knows how to write good stories for fangirls like me. So that’s why I was so excited to read her fantasy novel, Among the Beasts and Briars.

First and foremost, that cover is freaking gorgeous. Pictures don’t do it justice. You really need to hold a copy in your hand to see all the insanely beautiful details. I love it so much.

Second, the story. This book is pitched as a twisted version of “Beauty and the Beast.” It’s definitely not a retelling but it has elements of certain fairy tales that are taken and tossed and tangled around into something new and something darker. Let’s just say, it’s a story after my own heart.

As Ashley herself describes the book, it’s about “far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise!” And I enjoyed reading about this new world she created and the characters that came with it.

There is magic and dark twists and turns and fighting and an enchanted prince and a little bit of kissing and tragedy and secrets. But at the heart of the story is a girl named Cerys who doesn’t give up and doesn’t give in. She fights and fights and fights to save her family, her friends, and her kingdom even though she is considered a nobody. And there is just something about that kind of trope that I love.

Also Cerys’s magic is pretty dope.

While reading Among the Beasts and Briars, I kept thinking that the scope of this world was so much bigger than this single story. There’s a beautiful map included in the book and the characters mention places and things that don’t have a huge presence in the story. And I just wanted more. More stories, more world, more everything.

And then I got to the end, and I know that Ashley has more to tell about this world and these characters. So I’m looking forward to that and in the meantime, I’ll probably reread this book to catch what I missed since I read it so freaking fast.
