This week’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt is Bookish Characters. I’ve probably at some point done a Top Ten Tuesday post about characters who love books or reading, so instead, I’m going to focus on fictional characters who write.
Jo March from Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: The most obvious fictional writer is Jo March, and oh do I relate to Jo March a lot. She’s great.
Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery: Anne is another obvious writer from fiction and just like with Jo, I love her.
Eliza from Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia: Even though Eliza likes drawing more than writing, writing is necessary for creating her web comics so I’m counting her.
Kamal Khan from Ms. Marvel comics: As far as I know, Kamal only writes fanfiction about the Avengers but because that’s hilarious and she’s hilarious, I had to include her on this list.
Cristian from I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys: Cristian’s writings are such a pivotal point of the plot in this book.
Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien: Bilbo is actually the writer of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in-universe.
Lemony Snicket from A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket: Since Snicket is the writer of the books and a character, I had to include him on this list. I adore his personality and writing style so much.
Dr. Watson from Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: I don’t know why I always forget that Watson is a writer when he’s the writer/narrator of the Sherlock Holme stories.
Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling: Considering New Scamander is the one who wrote the Fantastic Beasts textbook, I’m going to count him as a writer.
Bartleby the Scrivener from “Bartleby the Scrivener” by Herman Melville: I suppose one could argue that Bartleby isn’t actually a writer since he doesn’t do any writing in the story. But since he was hired to be a scribe and I like his attitude in life, I’m counting him.
Bilbo Baggins is a great choice!

Great! Because it’s brilliant and one of the best books I’ve read this year.

You’re not the only one—I tend to forget that Dr. Watson is the “author” of the Sherlock Holmes stories, too. Great list! And I love that you included Bilbo as well.

I love Bilbo too much not to include him 🙂

Bilbo’s the best. I’m re-reading to The Hobbit now (listening to the version Andy Serkis narrated) and it’s a great reminder of why I loved Bilbo in the first place.

Yes! I need to listen to that version at some point, too. 🙂

It’s so good so far! I was a little nervous about the dwarf songs (because songs in audiobooks have the potential to be very cringy) but Serkis did a really good job with them. I would highly recommend this to any fans of Tolkien, and even to new readers of The Hobbit who are fans of audiobooks.

True! Songs can be hit or miss. I’m glad Andy Serkis does a great job with them. 🙂

I forgot that BOTH Watson and Baggins were the writers of the stories they are in haha. Great thinking including them!

Ah Lemony Snicket is such a great choice, I love how he’s both “writer” of the books and a character.
