Top Ten Tuesday: Fictional Libraries

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt is Favorite Bookstores OR Bookstores I’d Love to Visit in honor of National Bookshop Day (October 1 in the UK). I don’t know of ten bookstores I would want to visit. I try to shop an indie bookstores if I can, but the closet one to me is an hour away so I usually order online. I was going to list fictional bookstores for this week, but I wasn’t able to find enough I was familiar with so instead, because I use libraries more than bookstores, here are ten fictional libraries I wish existed!

Hogwarts Library from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling: I think we can all agree that we wish this library (and school) existed.

The Great Libraries from Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson: Sentient monster books might be a little too much, but just think of the aesthetics!

Grotto library from Race to the Bottom of the Sea by Lindsay Eagar: There are two libraries in this book, but the secret grotto pirate cave library sounds so cool.

Castle house from Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston: I want the house and the library and all the fandom-y collections.

Minas Tirith Library from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien: There isn’t a lot about the Minas Tirith Library but since Gandalf spent like 17 years searching for information about Bilbo’s Ring, I would think it’s massive and amazing. Just think about all those dusty old tomes. Though any library in Middle-earth would probably be amazing.

Ancient, underground library from The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern: I don’t remember a ton from this book at this point, but the library sounded so amazing.

The Great Library of Zosma from Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor: While I don’t like the way the librarians and scholars treat people in this library, the idea of such a grand, beautiful library is enchanting.

The Archive from The Archived by Victoria Schwab: This kind of library would be cool and spooky since it’s basically a collection of dead people.

Any of the libraries from Library Wars by Kiiro Yumi: Libraries that fight for freedom? Sign me up! I would love to see how these libraries function.

Beast’s Castle Library from Beauty and the Beast: This library isn’t from a book (unless you count random Disney books that include it), but I couldn’t make a list of fictional libraries without mentioning the OG amazing library. Every book lover wants this.

  1. Interestingly, I don’t remember a ton about The Starless Sea either, but I do remember thinking the books in it were really neat. (I’m choosing to see this as a good thing. Give it a few more years, and I can re-read The Starless Sea again to rediscover it.)

I also would love to see the library in Bookish and the Beast! It sounds like a great place to browse—and I’m particularly happy about the inclusion of SFF books in that library.

I went a different direction this week, and posted some more quotes about books: https://bookwyrmknits.com/2022/10/04/top-ten-tuesday-more-quotes-about-books/

      • I’m sure it wasn’t, but in some ways it seems like it was intentional that The Starless Sea leaves more of an impression than a memory. It feels very appropriate for that book that I can remember general feelings better than a plot summary. 🙂 (And this is not meant to be a slight against the book! I really liked it, it just stuck with me in different ways than most books I like.)

  2. This is such a great pivot from this week’s topic. If I had done something like this, Hogwarts’ library would’ve definitely made my list. If I had done books with bookstores in them, I would’ve chosen Flourish and Blotts too. 😀
