This week’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt is a Freebie. Sometimes having a freebie prompt throws me off, but I looked at what I did last year around this time and saw I listed my favorite backlist reads of the year for a freebie prompt. I thought I would do the same. These are books I read in 2022 but were published before 2022 and was not a reread.
Aurora’s End by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff: This was an excellent ending to the series.
Of Fire and Ash by Gillian Bronte Adams: It took me a bit to get into this one, but it was so good and well-written. It’s basically if Eowyn rode a fire horse and was queen of Rohan.
Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean: This one makes the list because of how much it surprised me. I really enjoyed the story.
Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price: This is also a book that surprised me. I enjoy Austen retellings for the most part, but I was a little wary of it being a murder mystery. But it was a lot of fun and the author did a good job with the adaptation aspects.
The Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey: I read the first of this series because of the movie and want to read more. They’re so fun and hilarious.
Vengeance Road / Retribution Rails by Erin Bowman: I need more western-esque stories in my life. I also want to read more of Erin’s books.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens: This book also surprised me. I listened to the audiobook and found myself super invested in the story and events.
Sherwood by Meagan Spooner: This was a fun retelling of Robin Hood. It reminded me a lot of the BBC show.
Woven in Moonlight / Written in Starlight by Isabel Ibañez: While I like Written in Starlight more, I love the world Isabel created and the characters’ stories. So fun. Plus, those covers are gorgeous.
The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones: I usually avoid horror/scary/zombie stories like the plague (no pun intended), but this one surprised me. I enjoyed the characters and the quest-esque plot and the world a lot. And the zombies weren’t too bad either. They were different than normal, and I appreciated that!
The Bone Houses was so surprisingly lovely!! I’m so glad you liked it!

Glad you enjoyed all of these so much! It’s exciting how many of these really surprised you. It gives me hope for all these backlist titles that have been sitting on my shelves for years. Maybe they actually turn out great once I finally get to them!

Thank you! And I love that older books can be kind of newly discovered treasures.
Good luck with your backlist titles. Hopefully you find a few gems as well 🙂

Fun list! I need to work on my backlist, too. And I had forgotten that I never read Sherwood! I really want to pick that one up. Maybe in 2023?

Yes! Sherwood is fun. I liked her Beauty and the Beast retelling, Hunted, better, but Sherwood still has its high points 🙂

I haven’t seen many Robin Hood retellings that appeal to me, so I’m still hopeful that I’ll like that one!

I just added Pride and Premeditation to my TBR, so it’s good to see a good review of it! I’m glad you read and enjoyed so much of your backlist this year.

Yay! Glad to reassure you. I thought how she did it was super fun and clever. It’s still YA and mystery, but it was a fun twist on the classic character and story.

I did love the sample from Kindle–it’s on my Christmas list, so here’s hoping!

I’m not sure what backlist books I’ve read this year that I loved. I’m not sure what new release I read this year that I loved, either. Lol!

Ha ha! Sometimes that’s okay. Just enjoy what you read, no matter when it was released 🙂
